Winter has its charm wherever you find yourself. Whether it's snowy mountains, cozy evenings by a fire, or simply enjoying the quiet stillness of the season, there's a lot to love about the colder months. But no matter how much I embrace the magic of my current winter destination, I can’t help but reminisce about the balmy waters and unique experiences of the Florida springs—especially swimming with manatees in the winter.
The memories of paddling pristine waterways, exploring Crystal River and Homosassa Springs, and camping at Thousand Trails Crystal Isles linger warmly in my heart. So, if you’re considering a winter escape to Florida’s natural gems, here’s a little inspiration from my time there.
Swimming With Manatees in Crystal River and Homosassa Springs
Crystal River and Homosassa Springs are two of the best places to experience manatees up close. Winter is the perfect time for this, as these gentle giants seek refuge in the warm, spring-fed waters.
In Crystal River, guided tours take you to spots like Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs, where you can snorkel alongside manatees in their natural habitat. At Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, you can view manatees without even getting wet. The park’s underwater observatory offers a unique perspective of these incredible creatures as they glide through the clear waters.
Paddling Adventures: SUPs and Serenity
Hunter SpringPaddleboarding on Hunter Spring feels like stepping into another world. The water is so clear you can see fish swimming beneath your board, and there’s always a chance of spotting a manatee gliding gracefully nearby. Start your paddle early to enjoy the tranquil beauty before the crowds arrive.
Weeki Wachee RiverThe Weeki Wachee River is a paddler’s dream. Launch your SUP or kayak and let the gentle current carry you through winding waterways framed by lush greenery. The vibrant blue water looks almost unreal, and you’ll likely encounter playful otters and diverse birdlife along the way.
Seeing Mermaids and Exploring Homosassa Springs
The Mermaid Show at Weeki WacheeNo visit to Weeki Wachee is complete without seeing the legendary mermaid show. This quirky Florida tradition has entertained visitors since 1947. Watching performers in shimmering tails dance and spin underwater is a nostalgic experience that blends whimsy with incredible skill.
Homosassa Springs Wildlife State ParkThis park offers a deeper look at Florida’s natural beauty and wildlife. In addition to its manatees, you’ll see native species like alligators, river otters, and even Lu the hippopotamus, the park’s most famous resident. Walking the boardwalk trails and taking the boat ride through the park are must-dos.
Camping at Thousand Trails Crystal Isles
My home base during these adventures was Thousand Trails Crystal Isles RV Resort. Nestled along a quiet canal, this campground offers spacious sites, a laid-back vibe, and easy access to Crystal River and Homosassa’s attractions. Amenities like a heated pool, clubhouse, and boat launch make it a great spot to unwind after a day of exploring.
