If you’re an RV traveler seeking the perfect way to spend your winter months, there’s no better place than Florida. With its endless sunshine, beautiful beaches, and a variety of outdoor activities, the Sunshine State is a prime destination for snowbirds and RV enthusiasts. As seasoned RV travelers, we’ve found that the Thousand Trails membership offers incredible value and flexibility, making it the perfect way to winter in Florida, hopping from park to park, and soaking in all the beauty this state has to offer.

Why Choose a Thousand Trails Membership for Florida Wintering?

Thousand Trails is a network of over 80 RV resorts and campgrounds across the U.S., with a particularly strong presence in Florida. As members, we get access to a wide range of parks that offer everything from basic campgrounds to full-blown resorts with amenities like pools, fitness centers, and organized activities. For snowbirds, it’s an excellent way to avoid the hassle of booking a new campsite every week while staying in places with great facilities.

The real draw for us has been the flexibility of the membership. We can stay at each park for up to 21 days, with a 7-day break between visits. This allows us to go park-to-park without worrying about constantly securing new reservations. It’s a huge advantage when you’re wintering in Florida, as many parks in popular areas fill up quickly.

Best Way to Get Reservations at High-Use Parks

Florida is a popular destination during the winter months, so securing a reservation at a top park can sometimes feel like a race. To ensure you get the best spots at your chosen parks, a bit of strategy is required.

  1. Book Early: During peak season (December through April), it’s essential to make reservations as early as possible. Thousand Trails members can book up to 60 days in advance, and while walk-ins are accepted, booking ahead is the safest bet to secure a spot.

  2. Use the Encore Parks Network: Thousand Trails is partnered with Encore Parks, which extends your membership benefits to additional parks. This is especially useful if a Thousand Trails park is fully booked or if you just want more variety. Encore Parks are scattered throughout Florida, and many are located in high-demand areas like Key Largo and the Gulf Coast.

  3. Plan for Longer Stays: Many high-use parks offer the ability to reserve for longer stays (up to 21 days), which can be beneficial if you’re planning to set up camp in one area for a while. Longer stays make it easier to lock in a spot during peak months and avoid the need to move frequently.

  4. Flexibility is Key: If you’re open to exploring less tourist-heavy areas or adjusting your travel dates, you’ll have more luck securing a reservation. While the most popular parks fill up fast, Florida has a large number of Thousand Trails and Encore parks, so there are plenty of options if you're flexible with your plans.

Exploring the Florida Keys with Thousand Trails

Two standout locations in Florida for RVers are the Thousand Trails Florida Keys RV Resort and the Encore Key Largo RV Resort. Both of these parks offer prime locations in the heart of the Florida Keys, a top destination for RV travelers.

  • Thousand Trails Florida Keys RV Resort: Nestled in the tropical beauty of the Keys, this resort features lush landscaping and easy access to beautiful beaches. The park offers amenities like a marina, fishing opportunities, and kayaking, making it a fantastic spot for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s a peaceful place to unwind, though reservations are highly recommended during peak season due to its popularity.

  • Encore Key Largo RV Resort: Located in the vibrant town of Key Largo, this upscale resort offers direct water access, making it perfect for boating, fishing, and other water activities. Amenities include a heated pool, hot tubs, and proximity to restaurants and attractions in Key Largo. Like the Thousand Trails resort, it’s a popular park, so early booking is essential.

Both parks are exceptional but tend to get booked up during the winter months, especially around holidays, so it's best to plan ahead if you want to secure a spot in these beautiful locations.

Limitations of a Thousand Trails Membership

While Thousand Trails offers great value, it’s important to consider some of the limitations when deciding if this membership is right for you:

  1. Availability During High Season: Florida’s peak RV season can make getting a reservation a bit challenging, especially at popular parks. While you can book 60 days in advance, some of the most sought-after parks can still fill up quickly.

  2. Park Maintenance: One thing we’ve noticed is that some Thousand Trails parks don’t always have the same level of maintenance as others. This is a point that some members have voiced concerns about. For example, some parks may have older facilities or areas in need of repair. That said, we don’t mind this as much because we tend to spend more time exploring the area and sightseeing than using the park’s amenities. If you’re someone who likes spending a lot of time in the park enjoying the amenities, it may be something to consider.

  3. Additional Fees: While your membership covers most things, certain services like upgraded sites, premium amenities, or special activities may come with extra fees. These additional costs can add up, so it’s something to keep in mind when budgeting for your trip.

  4. Stay Limits: The 21-day stay limit can be both a blessing and a curse. While it encourages exploration by requiring you to move every three weeks, it can also be a bit inconvenient if you prefer to settle down in one location for longer periods. However, it does provide an excellent opportunity to check out different areas within Florida.

Our Thousand Trails Experience in Florida

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed using our Thousand Trails membership during our time in Florida. The parks we’ve stayed in have mostly provided solid amenities, friendly staff, and a welcoming atmosphere. For us, the parks themselves are just a place to park and rest between adventures. We’re usually out exploring, sightseeing, and enjoying all that Florida has to offer—from the Keys to the Gulf Coast to the Everglades—so we don’t mind if some parks are a little more rustic or require a bit of extra maintenance.

That said, we’ve found that most of the parks we’ve stayed at have been enjoyable and provided the peace and quiet we need after a long day of adventure. The flexibility and cost savings offered by Thousand Trails have been invaluable, and we love the convenience of hopping from one park to another, often without worrying about finding new accommodations every week.

Wrapping Up

If you’re planning to winter in Florida and want an affordable, flexible way to travel between parks, Thousand Trails offers an excellent membership for RVers. While the parks vary in terms of amenities and maintenance, we’ve had a fantastic experience, largely because we spend more time exploring the state than hanging around in the park. With early planning and a little flexibility, securing reservations at high-demand parks is totally manageable, and the ability to stay in the Florida Keys is a definite perk. We’ve enjoyed every minute of our RV adventures in Florida, and we’re looking forward to more seasons spent hopping between Thousand Trails and Encore Parks. Safe travels!
